Anthology: Storytelling & Poetry in Motion premiers at OTCA November 16, 2024

Anthology: Storytelling & Poetry in Motion

Anthology
Hydrangea Sky Movement Arts is a multi-disciplinary movement company exploring the space from floor to air through dance, acrobatics, martial arts, flow arts, and aerial arts based out of Northern Arizona. Anthology follows the success of Ephemera, Unfurl, and CIRQUE – three original shows each premiered to sold-out audiences at Hydrangea Sky’s home venue, Old Town Center for the Arts.
Hydrangea Sky is a professional performance company dazzling audiences with high flying feats, mesmerizing movement arts, and a storytelling soul.

Anthology is a collection of stories shared through motion, exploring a range from the poignant beauty in the mundane - life’s collection of simple sequential moments - to the ethereal magic of the otherworldly and extraordinary. A man grapples repeatedly with the Sisyphean task to wake up from a deep sleep. A Forest Fairy Queen evokes the elements and summons both earthly and celestial creatures in a celebratory starlight dance. A dancer stricken with grief and loss navigates through a series of obstacles that ultimately give rise to joy, serenity, and acceptance. A flustered librarian pursues a cheeky mouse who has wrought chaos into her sacred reading space. Audiences will enjoy these stories and many more.

The event will include an intermission, concession stand with snacks, and signed cast posters available for purchase.

CIRQUE
CIRQUE will transport you back in time to an 1800s-inspired vintage circus with a modern twist, following the story of a lovable troupe of characters of the past remembered through a nostalgic lens by 'silent narrator' Adelaide La Ballerine played by Christine Eaton (present) and Marie Turner (past). Full of wonder, awe-inspiring stories, acrobatic and high-flying feats, CIRQUE rekindles the imaginative, unbridled joy of childhood dreams of running away with the Circus...

Q&A with Mingus Union High School Students after Ephemera Dress Rehearsal

Special thanks to James Ball, head of the theatre and choir department at Mingus Union High School and the Head Lighting Designer for Ephemera, and to Elena Bullard, Lighting Designer for Ephemera, for facilitating a Q&A opportunity with theatre and choir students engaged in and learning about the arts. This event was held after the students viewed the Dress Rehearsal performance of Ephemera Tuesday November 8, 2022. Students were invited to ask any questions about aerial arts and other movement art forms featured in the show, any behind-the-scenes questions regarding rehearsals, training, and performing on stage, and what it means to become a professional dancer in a company, and any other related subjects they were curious about.

Hydrangea Sky Movement Arts is dedicated to education in the arts, especially in our local community in the Verde Valley.

OTCA hosts the World Premiere Concert “Ephemera” by Hydrangea Sky Movement Arts

‘Ephemera’ is a captivating, enthralling evening of aerial dance, acrobatics, modern dance, martial arts, and flow arts, unfolding on and high above the stage at Old Town Center for the Arts in Cottonwood, Arizona on Friday and Saturday evening, November 11th & 12th, at 7:00 PM.  This multi-media event will be a stunning array of aerial arts, colorful lighting, evocative music and sound.

‘Ephemera’ is created by Hydrangea Sky Movement Arts, a company of diverse artists in Northern Arizona, performing high-flying stunts on aerial silks, corde lisse (rope), trapeze, lyra, aerial chains, sling, and straps; transitioning into the grounded movement arts of Kung Fu, Tai-Chi, modern dance, acrobatics, and Poi spinning.

Exploring the space from floor to air, through dynamic movement, each act is woven into a cohesive storyline that summons ethereal elements – the intangible and the profound – that connect us all. ‘Ephemera’ explores the dichotomy of time and memory being at once fleeting and eternal; juxtaposing the graceful and the primal, the groundedness on earth and the limitlessness of atmospheric space.

For this special event, several guest artists will be joining the staff, including James Ball as lighting designer, John Compton as stage manager, with special thanks to aerial rigging consultant Greg Fishell.

This debut full-length show of Hydrangea Sky Movement Arts dance company is the first show of its kind to be presented at Old Town Center for the Arts. To get a glimpse and preview of Hydrangea Sky Movement Arts dance company please visit: hydrangeasky.com.

Doors open at 6:00 PM for a special viewing of visual artist Marrin Robinson’s mixed media landscape paintings on display at OTCA. Marrin's solo exhibition is entitled "Light Across Time".

Greeting you at the door will be guest artist Deborah Heron Williams of High On Life Stiltwalking.

Tickets for Ephemera are $25 in advance, $28 at the door, and $30 priority seating and $35 VIP. Tickets for this special event are available online at www.showtix4u.com or in Cottonwood at Mount Hope Foods and Mysterium, and in Sedona, you can find tickets at The Mary D. Fisher Theatre.
